How to Write Helpful Ad Reviews

Writing good reviews doesn't have to be hard. Here are some simple tips to help you write reviews that others will find useful.

Start With the Basics

When you review an ad, start by answering these simple questions:

  • What product is being advertised?
  • Who is the ad trying to reach?
  • What's the main message?
  • Did it work for you?

Just answering these four questions gives people a good idea of what you thought.

Be Specific

Instead of saying "This ad is bad," explain why:

❌ "This ad is terrible." ✅ "This ad was confusing because it didn't show what the product does."

❌ "Great ad!" ✅ "This ad was funny and I still remember the joke a week later."

Being specific helps advertisers understand what works and what doesn't.

Talk About Different Parts

When you rate an ad, think about:

The Message

  • Was it clear what they were selling?
  • Did you understand the main point?
  • Was the information helpful?

The Creativity

  • Was it original or boring?
  • Did it catch your attention?
  • Was it memorable?

The Honesty

  • Did the ad seem truthful?
  • Were the claims believable?
  • Did anything seem misleading?

The Feeling

  • How did the ad make you feel?
  • Was it annoying or enjoyable?
  • Would you watch it again?

Use Examples

Help people understand by giving examples:

"The ad showed a family having dinner together, which made the frozen food seem more appealing than just showing the package."

"The music was too loud and made it hard to hear what they were saying about the product."

Be Fair

Every ad has good and bad points. Try to mention both:

"The special effects were amazing and really caught my eye, but the ad was so busy that I forgot what product they were selling."

"The message was clear and I understood the product right away, though the acting felt a bit stiff."

Keep It Simple

You don't need to write a book. A few sentences about what you liked and didn't like is perfect. Here's a good example:

"This car insurance ad used a funny talking animal that made me smile. The joke was clever and I actually remembered the company name later. However, they didn't mention any specific benefits or prices, so I don't know if their insurance is actually good. Overall, entertaining but not very informative. 3.5/5 stars."

Think About the Audience

Ask yourself: Who is this ad for?

  • Young people or older folks?
  • Parents or singles?
  • People with lots of money or budget shoppers?

Then think: Does the ad work for that audience?

"This ad for kids' cereal had bright colors and a fun cartoon character. My kids loved it and asked for the cereal at the store. As a parent, I wish it had mentioned the nutritional info, but it definitely worked on its target audience - kids!"

Don't Worry About Being Perfect

Your opinion matters, even if you're not an advertising expert. Just share what you honestly think.

Remember:

  • There's no "right" or "wrong" review
  • Your perspective is valuable
  • Even short reviews help

Quick Review Template

If you're stuck, try this simple format:

  1. What I saw: (Describe the ad briefly)
  2. What worked: (Things you liked)
  3. What didn't work: (Things that could be better)
  4. Who it's for: (The target audience)
  5. Overall opinion: (Would you recommend it?)

Final Tips

  • Be respectful - Criticize the ad, not the people who made it
  • Be honest - Share your real opinion
  • Be helpful - Write what you'd want to read
  • Have fun - Reviewing ads should be enjoyable!
