Law Enforcement Guidelines
How law enforcement can request data from RateAds.
We work with law enforcement when they follow proper legal process. These guidelines explain what we accept, what we share, and how members are notified.
What We Require
We need a valid subpoena, warrant, or court order from a court that has jurisdiction. Foreign law enforcement must use mutual legal assistance treaties. Email requests are not enough.
What We Share
We share only what the order specifies. For most requests, that means basic account data. Content of private messages requires a warrant, not just a subpoena.
Member Notice
We tell members when we get a request about them, unless a gag order prevents it. We track gag orders and notify members as soon as the order expires.
Emergency Requests
When there is a clear, immediate threat to life, we share data without a court order under emergency exceptions. We log every emergency case and review it after.
